Nerd Nite
Wednesday, February 13 - 7:00
Webster's Cafe Bookstore

Shannon will be one of the guest presenters at the inaugural State College Nerd Nite.  Nerd Nite is a monthly event held in more than 100 cities across the globe during which several folks give 18-21-minute fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines.

Join Shannon for her talk, entitled: “From Harem Fantasy to I Dream of Jeannie: Deconstructing the Myths & Wishtory of Belly Dance.”

Shannon will contrast the authentic roots and culture of Egyptian raqs sharqi (belly dance) against the most popular imagined (and often Orientalist) fantasies of the art form.  From fertility rituals to the hootchie kootchie, from goddess theory to the dance of the seven veils, outdated stereotypes abound. Shannon will show you why it’s time to give up the fantasies and embrace the vibrant, modern, culturally-rich dances of the Middle East.
